“Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29 NIV)
There are various organisations; cub scouts, mountain rescue and more that include ‘making a fire’ as part of their training. Fire is something that we cannot do without, whether it is for heat or light – fire is vitally important. The same is true of our own destiny, having a burning fire of desire is important to fulfilling a purpose. Without a fire that consumes everything else, we fall at hurdles like; fear, loneliness, sickness, anger and lust. The fire we have burning to do God’s will, must consume all other passions and desires. “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” (Luke 16:13 NIV) Both disciples Luke and Matthew recall this verse and it explains why you must be on fire for God or you will end up despising Him. When you are consumed by this fire, then you will start to radiate light, lighting up the world around you. Where does this fire come from? Jeremiah 23:29 tells us that God’s Word is this fire we search for. “I baptise you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11 NIV) When we are baptised we not only receive the Holy Spirit but fire too. That means if we are truly filled with the Holy Spirit, then we must also be filled with fire from God. Have you ever tried lighting a piece of damp wood for light? It doesn’t work, being Christian is not a spectator sport and you cannot succeed by being distant from God. The more you read the Word, the more you fellowship with other people, the more you practice your faith on a day to day basis - the easier it will be for you to catch fire. You can’t light a match without touching it with something; you cannot light up your life or the world without God’s touch. Seek Him in prayer, worship and faith.
